Indirekte Rede(Reported Speech) in Afrikaans: Rules, Examples and Exercises

Updated · 3 min read

Kom ons kraak dit.

Direct speech (direkte rede) gives someone’s exact words in quotation marks: Sipho sê: “Ek is moeg.” Reported speech (indirekte rede) tells someone else what was said, without the quotation marks: Sipho het gesê dat hy moeg was. You change a few small things every time, and once you know the checklist, it’s easy marks.

Rules

Put the reporting verb in the past tense

The reporting verb (sê, vra, antwoord, beveel) goes into the past tense with het … ge-. The quotation marks and the colon fall away.

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Sipho sê: “Ek is moeg.”Sipho het gesê dat hy moeg was.
Ma vra: “Is julle klaar?”Ma het gevra of ons klaar was.

Other useful reporting verbs: het geantwoord (answered), het beveel (ordered), het uitgeroep (exclaimed).

Statements: use “dat” and send the verb to the end

For a statement, join the two parts with the voegwoord (conjunction) dat (that). Dat kicks the verb to the end of the sentence.

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Lindi sê: “Ek is siek.”Lindi het gesê dat sy siek was.
Pa sê: “Ek het die motor gewas.”Pa het gesê dat hy die motor gewas het.

In everyday speech you can leave out dat: Lindi het gesê sy was siek. Then the word order stays normal. In a test, use dat unless your teacher says otherwise. It’s the safest way to show you know the rule.

Yes/no questions: use “of”

A question you answer with ja or nee is reported with of (whether/if). The question mark falls away, and the verb goes to the end, just like with dat.

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Thabo vra: “Is jy honger?”Thabo het gevra of ek honger was.
Die juffrou vra: “Het julle die werk verstaan?”Die juffrou het gevra of ons die werk verstaan het.

Question-word questions: keep the question word

If the question starts with a question word (wie, wat, waar, wanneer, hoekom, hoe), that word becomes the link. Don’t add dat or of. The verb still goes to the end.

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Anna vra: “Waar woon jy?”Anna het gevra waar ek gewoon het.
Oupa vra: “Hoekom is jy so laat?”Oupa het gevra hoekom ek so laat was.
Hy vra: “Wie het my pen gevat?”Hy het gevra wie sy pen gevat het.

Commands: use “moet”

A command (bevel) becomes a sentence with moet (must). You can say it without dat (normal word order) or with dat (verbs at the end). The exclamation mark falls away. In commands, moet stays moet.

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Ma sê vir my: “Was die skottelgoed!”Ma het vir my gesê ek moet die skottelgoed was.
Ma sê vir my: “Was die skottelgoed!”Ma het vir my gesê dat ek die skottelgoed moet was.
Die onderwyser sê: “Moenie praat nie!”Die onderwyser het gesê dat ons nie moet praat nie.

Moenie … nie becomes nie moet … nie.

Change the pronouns

The pronouns change to fit the person who is reporting the words. The most common changes:

In the quoteIn reported speech
ekhy / sy
my (my)sy / haar
ons (we)hulle
ons (our)hulle
jy / jou (said to you)ek / my
julle (said to you and others)ons
Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Zanele sê: “Ek het my sleutels verloor.”Zanele het gesê dat sy haar sleutels verloor het.
Die seuns sê: “Ons bus is laat.”Die seuns het gesê dat hulle bus laat was.

Always ask: who said it, and to whom? Then pick the pronoun that makes sense.

Shift the tense

Because the words were spoken in the past, the tense moves back:

  • Present → past: is → was, speel → het gespeel, het (have) → gehad het
  • Past stays past: het … gewas stays het … gewas. Afrikaans has only one past tense, so there’s nothing further back to shift to.
  • Future and modals: sal → sou, kan → kon, wil → wou
Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Hy sê: “Ek speel sokker.”Hy het gesê dat hy sokker gespeel het.
Sy sê: “Ek het ’n nuwe foon.”Sy het gesê dat sy ’n nuwe foon gehad het.
Sy sê: “Ek het die toets geslaag.”Sy het gesê dat sy die toets geslaag het.
Hulle sê: “Ons sal help.”Hulle het gesê dat hulle sou help.
Hy sê: “Ek kan swem.”Hy het gesê dat hy kon swem.

Change time and place words

The words weren’t said here and now, so time and place words change too.

In the quoteIn reported speech
noutoe
vandagdaardie dag
vanaanddaardie aand
gisterdie vorige dag
môredie volgende dag
hierdaar
hierdiedaardie
Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Ouma sê: “Ek sal môre kom kuier.”Ouma het gesê dat sy die volgende dag sou kom kuier.
Kyle sê: “Ek was gister hier.”Kyle het gesê dat hy die vorige dag daar was.
Sy sê: “Ek is nou besig.”Sy het gesê dat sy toe besig was.

Drop the exclamations

Words like sjoe, ag, eina and haai don’t make it into reported speech. Show the feeling with the reporting verb instead, e.g. het uitgeroep (exclaimed).

Direct (direkte rede)Reported (indirekte rede)
Nadia sê: “Sjoe, hierdie toets is moeilik!”Nadia het uitgeroep dat daardie toets moeilik was.

The checklist

Before you hand in, tick off every change:

  1. Reporting verb in the past (het gesê, het gevra)
  2. The right link: dat (statement), of (yes/no question), question word, or moet (command)
  3. Verb at the end after dat, of or the question word
  4. Pronouns changed
  5. Tense shifted (is → was, sal → sou)
  6. Time and place words changed (môre → die volgende dag, hier → daar)
  7. No quotation marks, no question mark, no exclamation mark

Common mistakes

Wrong: Hy het gesê dat hy is moeg.

Right: Hy het gesê dat hy moeg was.

After dat, the verb goes to the end, and is changes to was.

Wrong: Sy het gevra dat ek honger was.

Right: Sy het gevra of ek honger was.

A yes/no question is reported with of, not dat.

Wrong: Hy het gevra waar woon ek.

Right: Hy het gevra waar ek gewoon het.

After the question word, the verb goes to the end and shifts to the past.

Wrong: Sy het gesê dat sy môre sal kom.

Right: Sy het gesê dat sy die volgende dag sou kom.

Môre becomes die volgende dag, and sal becomes sou.

Wrong: Thabo het gesê dat ek my boek vergeet het.

Right: Thabo het gesê dat hy sy boek vergeet het.

If Thabo said “Ek het my boek vergeet”, ek and my change to hy and sy.
